Is Suicide Acceptable?

By Mackenzie Austin, and Catarina Carvalho

Suicide

Suicide:

The action of killing oneself intentionally

Western Views

Suicide is viewed as cowardly, and wrong. Although depression may cause some to consider suicide it is not viewed as socially acceptable and understandable. Also attempted suicide was considered the equivalent to attempted murder in the late 19th century.

Japanese Views

In Japan, suicide is viewed as an honorable, way of escaping disgrace. As well as a method to erase any disgrace one has brought upon one's family. Suicide is illegal, but socially is considered courageous.

Committed

Christian

The word we used for the act of suicide is committed; a word commonly used for crimes or bad acts.

The Christian view on suicide is that it is sinful, and the soul of the person committing suicide will not gain the advantages of the afterlife, and will not go to heaven.

Mothers and Children

On the other hand, if a mother commits suicide leaving the children to live without a mother, it is seen very negatively. Mothers are expected to take the children with them in suicide, because Japanese believe that it is "Kawaiisou" (which translates to "poor thing") to live without a mother. "Oyako-shinju" (parent-child suicide)
