Barriers to Migration are what prevent people from migrating to another country. Some examples are; Physical Barriers, Economic Barriers, Legal Barriers, Procedural Barriers, and Political Barriers.

Illegal:

Illegal migration is when people try to escape their countries and enter another illegally. The most common type of illegal migration is by boat because its the easiest way.

Legal:

Legal Migration is the safest way to migrate. In some countries, such as Canada, you require identification ( a passport) to leave and enter the country.

Physical Barriers are Natural Barriers such as;

  • Mountains
  • Deserts
  • Oceans

Mountains prevented Migration effectively. Deserts made people go out of their way by great distances to go around them. Huge bodies of water were also barriers as well because of the dangers of being on open water for long periods of time. However many of these barriers have been over-ruled by today's technology (cars, planes, boats, etc.).

Not having enough money to move, for example, is an Economic Barrier. Because of the cost of Migration, many people are not able to migrate.

An example of a Legal Barrier is when a country has a maximum number of immigrants allowed to enter each year (Quota). If there are more Immigrants that apply to enter the country, they are refused

When people apply to enter Canada, they must complete a series of application forms. Once finished, the application forms are processed and it is decided whether or not to let the immigrant in our country. This process is very stressful and time consuming. It also requires a lot of paperwork.

Some Governments set up many different ways to prevent people from entering and exiting their country. For example, after World War two the communist-controlled countries shut their borders and in what was East Germany, the Berlin Wall was built to keep he citizens in and others out.
