Hurts Job Employment Opportunities

Negative Impact on Well Being

Study: "We text messaged young adults in the US five times per day for two weeks to examine how Facebook use influenced the two components of subjective well being: how people feel moment to moment and how satisfied they are with their lives in the long run."

The more they used Facebook the more negative moment to moment texts they received, and the more they used Facebook over the 2 weeks the worse they felt over time.

Negative Impact on Self Esteem

“Active participation on Facebook in young adults was key in producing a sense of belonging among social media users.” - Dr. Stephanie Tobin from The University of Queensland's School of Psychology

Conclusions

If it has so many negative ramifications then why are people using Facebook?

Negative Impact on Self Esteem

Can we stop this?

youtube: can we autocorrect humanity

Results:

Students who were not using their Facebook as much as others and students who were not receiving feedback on their posts began to experience feelings of exclusion and low self esteem

Students claimed to feel "invisible" when their posts were commented on.

Facebook in the minds of many young adults, measures the amount of popularity or self worth an individual has.

“ The types of actions users take and the kinds of information they are adding to their Facebook walls and profiles are a reflection of their identities. You are your Facebook, basically, and despite all its socialness, Facebook is a deeply personal medium.”

"The more you get connected to Facebook, the stronger you feel that the items you post - the pictures, for example - are part of your identity and the more likely you are going to view these as your virtual possessions."

- Shyam Sundar, co-director of the Media Effects Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State
