The Beatles

Long Island

New York

Heather liked listening to The Beatles. They were a popular band from Britain whose music made its way to the US and became very popular in the 1960s. Every time one of their songs would come on the radio she would turn up the music. The Beatles were a rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960; the four singers were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles hit number one on the music charts in about thirty-five countries during this time period. They went on to sell more than a billion records. "Please Please Me" was the first studio album by The Beatles. The album was released on March 22, 1963. People still listen to their music today.

Heather lives on Long Island, New York where she has lived since the day she was born. Long Island is a peninsula located off the East Coast of the United States and stretches into the Atlantic Ocean. Long Island has four counties: Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. The three ways you can get to Long Island, NY from New York City are by plane, car, or train. The population on Long Island today is over seven million people. While in 1967, it was nearly half that.

The Vietnam War

Columbia University

The Vietnam War is taking place during the story. Heather has strong opinions about the war and is determined to help put a stop to it. The Vietnam War started in the early 1950s and ended in April of 1975 with the fall of Saigon. On March 8, 1965, the first US combat troops arrived in Vietnam. Many people believed this was the start of the war. There were over half a million American soldiers in Vietnam in 1968. During the late 1960s there were protests around the United States against America's involvement in the war.

Heather was interested in going to Columbia University, however her father, Mr. Hoodhood did not agree. Mr. Hoodhood wanted her to work and thought that there is no crazier place than college. Heather’s point of view for Columbia University was that “it’s the school where students are striking against the war and against racism.” This was the main reason she wanted to go there. It is also located in New York City close to where Heather lives. King's College was originally founded in 1754 by royal charter and is now known as Columbia University.

Flower Child

Heather wanted to be a flower child, but her father Mr.

Hoodhood would not let her. Flower children were hippies in the 1960s. Instead of hippies, people referred to them as Flower Children. Flower Children were teenagers and young adults who wanted to stop the Vietnam War and promote peace and racial equality. They were known for wearing flowers to symbolize peace and love. Flower children were often gathered at protest marches and sit-ins promoting things they wanted to change.
