Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austrian Throne and archduke of Austria) was assassinated alongside his wife on the 28th of June by a Serbian youth whilst representing Austria in Sarajevo- Bosnia. stipulations were sent to the serbian government by the Austria-Hungary government, which the Serbians agreed to all of them, except one, which was essentially handing the control of Serbia away.
With the two alliances (the Triple Entente consisting of Britain, France and Russia against the Triple Alliance which included Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy.) threats were fired from one alliance to another until suddenly, on the first of August 1914 Germany declared war on Russia and France, then invaded the neutral countries of Luxembourg and Belgium, which caused Great Britain (including her colonies) and Belgium to enter the war to join the allied powers into the battle that at the time was dubbed "The Great War", or "The War To End All Wars", World War 1
USA had started the war as a neutral country which supplied guns, mainly to Great Britain. The Germans had begun to launch attacks onto merchant boats with their submarines, which the American government felt threatened by. In order to protect themselves from the Germans they decided to enter the war and aid the triple alliance in their efforts to defend themselves.

November 11 1918 was the date that Germany signed an armistice with the allies which put and end to world war 1. nowadays we celebrate this day with a minute of silence at 11:11 on the 11th of the 11Tth
The Serbians were not afraid of the attack from Austria-Hungary because of their secret alliance with Russia. Austria-Hungary had an alliance with Germany which caused Germany to attempt to keep Russia away from them. Russia's alliance with France caused the French to enter the war, alongside the British and British colonies (like Australia.)
Australia and New Zealand's first involvement it the war came with the fleets landing on difficult terrain to overcome, and many defenses from the Ottoman Empire. Around 2000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers died in the eventually failed efforts to take over the Gallipoli peninsula.
