Having been claimed by Christopher Columbus in 1494 and then evicted by the English in 1655 by William Penn, the Federation of the West Indies was formed by Britain 1958 with the aims of making all 10 Caribbean islands a single state. However, it backfired and triggered calls for complete British independence, with Jamaica leaving the federtion in 1962. Between the start and end of British rule Jamaica had become the world's largest sugar exporter and slave-dependant states.

Rocksteady

Reggae

Introduced in the late-60s from Kingston. Characterized by 'shuffle' rhythm on drums and keys (with the move from piano to electric organ too). Lyrical focus was political, with mention of 'Babylon', as well as on love and social criticism.

Emerged mid-60s, performed by vocal groups influenced by US soul songs. Typically much slower than Ska and usually about love. The 'One Drop' was more frequent in Rocksteady than in Ska and a smaller band brought about focus on the bass part.
