Similarities

  • The Journey: The heroes in both stories must overcome challenges preventing them from returning to their families.
  • The Faithful Marriage: A parallel can be drawn between Penelope and Lori. Both wives are faced with the temptation of disregarding their husbands and giving in to their suitor(s).
  • Father-Son Bond: More specifically, the relationship between Carl and Rick or Telemachos and Odysseus is strained by the dire circumstances.
  • Family Dynamic: The bond between the Grimes and Odysseus families is tested by the disappearance of the father.

The Walking Dead and The Odyssey

The (not so) Faithful Marriage

Quick Summary of The Walking Dead

Lori: Carl's fierce mother

Lori, unfortunately, struggles with remaining loyal to her husband. At the beginning of the apocalypse, she believes him to be dead and shows interest in a family friend of theirs, Shane.

Her new suitor provides comfort during her brief mourning period for her husband and helps protect Carl from danger.

TWD tale, like The Odyssey, has a strong motherly figure who must fight against the odds and protect her son, all while preserving the sanctity of her marriage with the group's leader, Rick.

In this post-apocalyptic world that takes place in Georgia, a small group of survivors bands together to fend of the zombies constantly trying to kill them. The Grimes family is separated during the outbreak, forcing them to trust strangers who have not been infected yet.

Penelope:Telemachos' guardian

The Journey

With her husband gone and her son out searching for him, Penelope is left behind to deal with the men trashing her home. Like Lori, she musters up the courage to remain faithful and upholds her poise.

Despite being accused of leading on the suitors, Penelope remains loyal to Odysseus. Unlike Lori, she upholds her wedding vows.

The Walking Dead

The Odyssey

Odysseus' timeless tale of adventure has captured the interest of endless audiences. Who doesn't want the hero to win? His journey home isn't without challenges. Everything around him seems to want him to fail. He, like TWD group, must fight every day to survive. With wit, cunning, strength, and the kindness of others, he proceeds.

As a fellow Georgian, TWD has really struck a heartstring as I root on the group of survivors and gush at the different places they visit because I can recognize most of them. During his search for his family, Rick must cooperate with fellow survivors who save his life and provide him shelter.

Obstacles

Friendly Aid

Throughout his journey, Odysseus requires the aid of others. In one circumstance, he charms the Artemis-like Nausikaa into helping him.

Odysseus had to face and defeat monsters like the cyclops and the sea creatures of angered Poseidon's seas.

Rick stumbles, lost, through the city and would have died if not for another man who spotted his injury.

Obstacles

Senoia, Georgia is only a 20 minute drive from home.

Zombies. Zombies everywhere. Rick awakens from a coma and finds that he must avoid or kill these flesh eaters, all while searching for supplies.

Family Dynamic

Grimes Homecoming

Despite the looming apocalypse, the Grimes family overcomes the zombies and is able to be reunited again. In a time with little hope, they had each other to look forward to.

Odysseus Homecoming

With the help of Telemachos, Odysseus manages to return home and restore order.

Father- Son Bond

Telemachos, the Loyal Son

Despite the odds, Telemachos searches for Odysseus, hoping to bring him home so he can get rid of the suitors harassing his home and mother.

Carl, the Devoted Son

Even though Carl holds a grudge against his father for disappearing for a while, he chooses Rick over his substitute.

The father-son bond survives even the most gory moments

Like Telemachos, Carl holds on to the hope that his father has survived and is heading to find them. He also scoffs at the idea of his mother replacing Rick with her new paramour.
