Alternatives/ Better Productivity
- It would be hard to live without this product as not every Starbucks costumer will carry around their own cup or reuse their cup, but the number produced could be decreased as to eliminate excess
- A possibility is that the paper cup must be made so that it is 100% recyclable, but the process required to do this is unknown therefore it may or may not use more energy and material. Another possibility is that the Starbucks paper cup is still made the same, and the recyclers change. the cups are recyclable as is, but most do not recycle.
- Starbucks cups are distrusted to every store worldwide. At each of these stores this cup is used for every hot beverage that is served. The sleek and environmentally friendly design have garnered support from people across the globe and is a staple of the company. Marketing for this product is only done when the winter holidays are approaching as Starbucks releases a new winter design each year. These cups are created the same way only printed with a different color and design on them
- About 80% (3 billion per year) of the paper cups are thrown away outside of Starbucks and then taken to landfills
- At the landfills, these cups take years to slowly degrade emitting carcinogens, methane and carbon dioxide
- At International Paper the sheets are processed into paper. The machine uses electrical energy to press and mold the paper, while thermal energy is used to dry the paper
- The paper is fed through a converter machine to be cut into pieces of paper board
- The boards are fed through a printing machine to get the Starbucks logo printed on them. Starbucks cups are printed with water based ink, which are more environmentally friendly and less toxic
- With the logo on, the paper is fed through a cup making machine. The paper is folded and creased and the sides are sealed together
-The harvested trees are sent to a debark facility which are usually comprised of machines that run on electricity, diesel, and/ or wood waste.
- The debarked trees are sent o another facility to be chipped. The trees are chipped with huge knives attached to steel wheels. The knives are run with chemical and electrical energy.
- The chips are then converted to the desired bright white and smooth pulp. The chips are fed into a digester where chemicals are added. The digester is heated to remove lignin. The solution is heated and fed through different digesters as other chemicals are added. The finalized pulp is sent to International Paper who convert the pulp into rolls of paper.
- 357,000,000 trees are annually cut down to produce all of Starbucks paper cups. These trees are privately owned land plots in Brazil and Russia.
- Knowing have many trees they use, Starbucks created a plan to plant a tree every time someone buys/ uses a tea bag
- The machines used to harvest these trees are cable and grappler skidders, feller buncher, forklift, and brush cutters all of which use diesel to run.
