Beastie Boys are an American hip hop band from New York City, formed in 1981. For the majority of its career, the group consisted of three MCs and musicians Michael "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, bass) and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar).

Time Period

Years Active:

1981 - present

Being white and involved in rap, Beastie Boys received plenty of criticism by hip-hop musicians and other people, who accused them of cultural pirating. The exaggerated b-boy and frat-boy parodies of their unexpected 1986 hit debut album, Licensed to Ill, made this statement seem true. However, their 1989 Dust Brothers-produced follow-up, Paul's Boutique, was one of the first albums to change that.

At a time where black rappers were more dominant and popular, Beastie Boys appeared as "the first big white rap group". After emerging from New York's hardcore punk underground in the early 80s, the trio crossed over into the mainstream in 1986 with their first full-length album, Licensed to Ill, their first rap album to reach number one. The album sold 720,000 copies in six weeks, becoming one of Columbia's fastest-selling debuts ever. In the late 80s, Beastie Boys' take on hip-hop began maturing, and throughout the 90s the group ventured into spaced-out funk, psychedelia and lounge music, yet keeping its adolescent charm and hit-making sensibility.
