The Birth of Dionysus

Dionysus the only God with a mortal parent, had an interesting birth. Zeus came to Semele unseen by humans, but Semele could sense the godly presence.

Later Hera found out about the affair Zues and Semele had while Semele was Pregnant. Hera came in the form of and old crone, to befriend Semele, only to later make Semele doubt that Zeus was the real father. Curious enough, Semele demanded Zeus reveal himself in his godly form.

Though Zeus begged against her wish, she persisted, and he agreed. Therefore, Zeus came forth wreathed in lightning bolts, and she perished in the blaze of Zeus. Unborn Dionysus was rescued by Zeus when he sowed Dionysus into his thigh

Zeus kept Dionysus in his thigh until he was fully developed a couple months later, when dionysus was born on Mount Pramnos, getting the epithet dimētōr.
