The hunger strike is an ancient weapon that was used in Ireland. There are legends where the life of Patrick went on hunger strike and thirst strike, lasting forty-five, when he was told by an angel that he asked for too much. There was similar case with a man named St. Albeus.

Prisoners when they went on hunger strike meant seriously business. When they when on a hunger strike some would be starved to the point where they were skin and bones; barely any muscle.

The summary of the book is about the history of the Irish hunger strike, how ten men starved themselves to death in inside the walls of a prison. Though it says ten men went on hunger strike, many also did.

Ten Men Dead

David Beresford

1989

The theme of this book is freedom and selfishness. One of the themes is freedom because it is what most crave for in this story, mostly prisoners and followers that believe there should be a difference. The other theme is selfishness because the hunger strike is like a rebel for not getting what you want from life.

Setting:

The story takes place in Ireland in 1981 at the Long Kesh prison in Belfast.

And after years of rebelling and strong wills, the hunger strike comes to an end with an agree between everyone.

This symbolized the car chase that had happen on April 8, 1997. Hughes, a man that used to be a police officer, and two of his colleges were trying to out drive a couple of police cars.

This symbolized the letter that Raymond, a simple country boy, received.

They're was a lot of names and death that were listed but some of the most memorable ones was Patrick, Sean McCaughey, and Thomas Ashe. Patrick was a man that went on hunger strike to get God to give what he needed, Sean McCaughey was a man that was a part of the IRA, most precisely, he was the IRA chief of staff. Thomas Ashe was a 32 year old man, that was an former of the Irish Republicans.

This symbolized the lack of control the prisoners had. Many that went on hunger strike and were still alive weeks later usually brought attention the the guards that ran the place and take action. They'd take the prisoner on hunger strike and try to force feed the man (or woman). This would always kill the prisoner but the guards continued this strategy thinking it was somehow going to work.

This symbolized the IRA (Irish Rebel Army) that fought against the government.

Quotation:

"King:...Three days ago

Bishops, Soldiers and Makers of the Law-

Who long had thought it against their dignity

For a mere man of words to sit amongst them

At the great council of the State and share

I their authority. I babe him go,

Though at the first with king and courteous words,

But when her pleaded for the poet's right,

Established at the establishment of the world,

I said that I was King, and that all rights."

H-block was like a rebel army against the republicans. They helped and damaged a lot, the leaders made many sacrifices from leaving there family to death for the H-block.
