Salva sees a group of people from his village

When they were caught by the enemies, they tied Salva’s uncle up to a tree and shot him right in the forehead. He died straight away. This is important because Salva has experienced another death but of a person in his family.

Salva gets the chance to go to America

Buska (his friend) finds a beehive. The group eventually gets it but is hurt from all of the bees’ stings. Salva had terrible hunger before but now his stomach is full of honey comb. He is not hungry anymore so that’s why it is important.
Salva gets to go to America and live with a new family. He is not used to all of the new things in America. This is important because he finally gets to live a good life and live the life of an American citizen.

Salva leads the group of boys from Ethiopia to Kenya

Salva shows his leadership by leading a big group of boys across rivers and through tough times to a refugee camp. This is important because he is being a leader and giving the boys hope.
“He organized the group, giving everyone a job: scavenge for food; collect firewood; stand guard while the group slept.” pg 81
