A Long Walk to Water Timeline

Salva sees his uncle die right in front of him

1985- Southern Sudan

Salva sees a group of people from his village

1985- Southern Sudan

He was left alone in the barn

1985- Southern Sudan

When they were caught by the enemies, they tied Salva’s uncle up to a tree and shot him right in the forehead. He died straight away. This is important because Salva has experienced another death but of a person in his family.

After he cannot stay with the old lady anymore, he sees a group of people from his village that are walking. He decides to join them. Now that he knows some of the people he is walking with it is important.

Salva was walking with his group and they decided to stay and sleep in a barn. When Salva woke up the next morning, he was left alone in the barn with nobody there. He now has nobody to take care of him so that’s why it is important.

“As Salva watched, one of the men aimed his gun at Uncle. Three shots rang out. Then the men ran away.” pg 63

“Dinka patterns again-the kind that were given to the boys in Salva’s village as part of the ritual of becoming a man. These people were Dinka, too!” pg 19

Salva finds a beehive and eats it after being terribly hungry

Salva gets the chance to go to America

Salva helps villages in Southern Sudan

2009-Southern Sudan

The government is starting to attack the village of Southern Sudan. Salva and his classmates have to escape to the bush to stay safe. They end up running away from the village.

Buska (his friend) finds a beehive. The group eventually gets it but is hurt from all of the bees’ stings. Salva had terrible hunger before but now his stomach is full of honey comb. He is not hungry anymore so that’s why it is important.

Salva gets to go to America and live with a new family. He is not used to all of the new things in America. This is important because he finally gets to live a good life and live the life of an American citizen.

Salva is helping out villages in Southern Sudan by providing water holes and finding them. This is important because he is now helping out people of his old village and showing how he is making a difference in the world.

Salva learns that Marial has died

Salva finds his uncle in the group

Salva hears a voice from the group behind him. It is his uncle! Now Salva knows somebody well in the group and has a member of his family with him which is very important.

In the middle of the night, Salva is awoken by his uncle and learns that his friend Marial has been taken by a lion and has died. This is important because Salva has experienced the death of someone he cares about for the first time.

Salva leads the group of boys from Ethiopia to Kenya

“Uncle!” he cried out, and ran into the man’s arms. Uncle Jewiir was the younger brother of Salva’s father.” pg 34

“Marial was gone-vanished into the night.” pg 40

Salva shows his leadership by leading a big group of boys across rivers and through tough times to a refugee camp. This is important because he is being a leader and giving the boys hope.

“He organized the group, giving everyone a job: scavenge for food; collect firewood; stand guard while the group slept.” pg 81
