US-Mexico war

-Two nations one border like Rome

-A conflict that occurred as the result of Mexican resentment over the US invasion of Texas and a border dispute

-the Mexican-American War represents the only major military disagreement between the two nations.

-The war was fought mostly in northeastern and central Mexico and resulted in an American victory.

- As a result, Mexico was forced to give its northern and western provinces to America and it is now the western part of the U.S.

-The causes of the Mexican-American War can be traced back to Texas winning its independence from Mexico.

- After the end of the war, Mexico refused to acknowledge the new Republic of Texas.

Systems of Government - Rome

Democracy- citizens rule directly in making laws. Majority rules

Republic- Citizens elect representatives who make laws

•Senate- 300 aristocratic members chosen for life- advise consults, financial and foreign policy

•Centuriate Assembly- All citizen-soldiers are members- elect consuls, make laws

•Tribal Assembly- Plebeian assembly- elect tribunes, make laws

•Consuls- 1 year term elected by C. Assembly, Government executive, commander of army

•Tribunes- Representatives of Plebeian class, protect from unfair patrician acts

-Dictator- leader with absolute power to make laws and command the army. Six month term

-only chosen in times of emergency

-Roman government was mainly a dictatorship even though they did have a Senate.

-Who controlled the army was one of the main differences and the Senate went along with whatever Cesar wanted.

USA Government

-American government is based on three branches that balance each other and no one has total control.

-In order to do anything, there must be approval from every branch.

-There is no king as a ruler.

-The three branches are the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial

-Executive Branch:

-Headed by the president. The president recommends and carries out federal laws. He directs national defense and foreign policy, and performs ceremonial duties. The powers include, commanding the Armed Forces, directing government dealing with international powers, acting as chief law enforcement officer, and vetoing laws.

-Legislative Branch:

-Headed by Congress, which includes the Senate and the House of Representatives. The main task is to make the laws. The House of Representatives can pass laws and originate spending bills. The Senate can charge officials and approve the treaties.

-Judicial Branch:

-Headed by the Supreme Court. It has the power to review laws, interpret the Constitution, and decide cases that involve states' rights.

(persecution)

- The people of ancient Rome had many gods and goddesses.

-The Romans believed that if they appeased their gods and goddesses, then their religions would bless their crops and fertile them. They also believed that the gods would watch over their families and keep all of their close ones safe.

- if they angered or disobeyed their gods they would be severely punished

-Romans also had a set of public gods, such as Jupiter and Mars.

-Their religion was not like Christianity where one loves and trusts God.

-Many different religions in US

-one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world

-Many U.S. citizens believe in God and are Christian

-Many praise God the Father and don't have gods and worship different things.

-The majority of Americans identify themselves as Christians and about 20% don’t participate in or have any religion

-Many of the most common religions in the U.S. are Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Catholic, Hinduism, Sikhism, Taoism, New Age

-Roman slavery - based on birth.

The ancients didnt care for eachothers race and it didnt affect anything of racism.

Prejudice against foreigners, based on nationality, not race.

-Hundreds of slaves were freed every year.

-The freed slaves in Rome, were free to become whatever they desired and many of them took that chance

-They still had a great deal to pay to their masters though

-Slavery in Rome was effective to both the economy and the society.

-common throughout the Mediterranean region, and the Hellenistic regions in the east, but not so much to others as it was to the dominance of Rome. -Millions of slaves were transported to Rome, the Italian countryside and Latin colonies all over Europe.

- The slaves became over populated and there were not enough masters.

-American slavery was based on race

-In America, barely any slaves were freed.

-America it was much more difficult, as race and lack of education worked against the freed slave.

-American slaves could not buy their freedom like Rome.

-Like Rome, the slaves were not treated right and did not have the same rights as other people

Rome’s Downfall: Economy, Military, Germanic invasions, Splitting Empire

-By 476 AD Germanic invasions destroyed the old Roman Empire in the west.

- The Germanic tribes had been a constant source of pressure on the Roman empire for centuries.

- Many germanic tribes had moved into the empire and become citizens of Rome.

- There were many causes to the downfall of Rome like social, economic and politcal causes.

- Slavery had weakened the citizens and had a big effect on the downfall. There were many slaves in Rome and had taken over and wanted to have war and rights.

- The work ethic declined as the breakdown in the labor force occured.

- As productivity decreased, Rome became more dependent on foreign products.

- There had been a weakening in the traditional Roman community

Economic Causes.

- There wasn't a good balance of trade.

- The cost of government, military and welfare became difficult.- The problem of succession was never solved.

- There was economic warfare between the poor and rich people

- In the Roman Empire, some of the parts were not taxed and other parts were overtaxed

- The military started to become less loyal to the country. The military became a job instead of a mission.

The government was not designed to rule a large empire and when it started to improve, it was too late.

- The government was run by the military and the rich citizens.

- The -government became distant to the citizens and they eneded up losing interest in it

US Downfall-

-Government spending is expanding at an fast-growing rate.

-Between now and 1980, the U.S. national debt grew over more than 14 times larger and still continues

-Obama administration is projecting that the this year will be an all-time record -6 trillion dollars

- Household debt has gone up huge levels over the last 30 years.

- The total of all debt in the United States is way over 50 trillion dollars.

-Thousands of factories in the United States get shut down

-millions of our jobs get shipped overseas

-The number of unemployed Americans rises up and up all the time.

-The U.S. imports so much from foreign countries and we are in debt because of it

- The median duration of unemployment in the United States is in unprecedented territory.

-the value of the U.S. dollar has gone down by over 95 percent.

-The Federal Reserve thinks that if we t print even more money out of thin air it will solve all of our economic issues.

-With the new money, it creates inflation and rises the price for oil.
