Standards

Occupation Organization

  • All members of the community:
  • Kind and respectful to each other
  • All students must keep up with school and homework
  • Members expected to follow rules/laws and must cooperate with govt.

Government

  • All members of community must get a job at age 18.
  • Council of 25 (chosen by Ellie and Yunnie) assigns jobs by observing members and interviewing them
  • When member of council dies or retires, remaining members choose another person
  • Council sends letter to member informing them on their new job and info on what to do next
  • Everyone works the same hours but on different shifts
  • Retirement is an option after twenty years of work
  • Govt. provides the retired members with certain amount of credit per month
  • Attending job = Credit for food, hospital care, etc.
  • Missing a day = no gain in credit
  • Missing too many days for no reason = suspension
  • Council of 30 are the government (chosen by Ellie and Yunnie)
  • This council of 30 responsible for managing the community and keeping it going
  • When a member of council dies or retires, remaining members choose another person

Punishments

  • If community members 18 and over break laws, they are a given a jail sentence
  • If community members under age of 18 break laws or rules, they get slapped on the hands
  • Jail time assigned by the govt.
  • Number of slap on the hands assigned by parents or teacher

  • Local childcare centers
  • Children can work on homework or play with others
  • Childcare provides food

Food/Agriculture

  • Local farmers provide fresh produce, dairy products, and meat for grocery stores or restaurants

Housing

  • All houses are identical
  • Once you get a job, you can get your own house

Weather

  • Only Spring (January-June) and Fall (July-December)
  • Can be mildly sunny or cloudy
  • Light rain often occurs

Population

  • Since people are not required to marry or have children and since family units are limited to a max. of 6 children, overpopulation is not an issue
  • If a lack of people in the community occurs, family units take action and this problem resolves

Health

  • Hospital is provided for the community by govt.
  • Members of community are required to attend checkup at the hospital every 6 months

Death

  • After a member dies, community-wide funeral is held and they are buried

Education

  • All children starting from age of 3 must attend school until age of 18
  • Preschool-12th Grade
  • Everyone is taught same lessons
  • School teaches basic curriculum (reading, writing, math, etc.)
  • 4 month break

Family Units

Introduction

  • Family units should consist of:
  • mother
  • father
  • any amount of children mother and father desire (minimum: 0 maximum: 6)
  • Minimum age for marrying: 21
  • Both spouses must be community members
  • Children should be well taken care of and parents have responsibility over them until children are 18
  • No adoption unless necessary

After reading "The Giver" and looking at communities such as the Amish and Mennonite, we have made our own Utopia. Our Utopia consists of fair, efficient, and organized systems that pleases all citizens.
