The role of the CYC in a residential milieu includes various aspects for effective treatment. These aspects include: physical, emotional, social, cultural, and ideological.
(Hampshire County Council, 2016)
Physical - homelike atmosphere (furniture, wall decor, functional and well stocked kitchen, access to outdoors, and bathrooms offering privacy and comfort.
Emotional- acknowledge emotion and recognize they're going through challenging times and experiences, were there to support and accept them unconditionally.
Social - participation and engagement in social activities day to day.
Cultural- appreciate differences and recognize diversity.
Ideology- creating a sense of normalcy.
The domain of Professionalism tells us as CYC's how we present ourselves as people and professionals to children/youth, families, and other practitioners.
Professionalism includes various sub-domains, some of these concepts include ethics, supervision, and professional development.
The sub-domain of Ethics speaks to CYC
s to develop the ability to make ethical decisions on the spot reflective of the CYC field, the agency, and ones self.
To demonstrate the sub-domain of supervision a CYC is typically seen as approachable, humorous, and positive. Supervision requires CYC's to be a support to not only clients, but to staff as well. It consists of providing staff with constructive criticism and promoting growth of ones professional skills.
Professionalism is a life long process, continuously developing and increasing knowledge, the CYC is required to ensure the most effective treatment and support provided to clients. Techniques are constantly updating and changing this increases the importance and need of development. CYC's need to have a full understanding of the CYC field and keep certifications up to date.
(WAYS, 2015)
Bring insight regarding personal and professional development and having knowledge of self influences on clients and families.
The domain of self includes various concepts, some of which include: reflective practice, self-care, and boundaries (both personal and professional).
Residential homes are for children/youth who are unable to remain in their homes.
These programs are helpful for youth who are:
- wanting a healthy and safe living condition
- currently receiving mental health services or CAS services
- preparing for independence
- in need of short term stabilization
Residential programs offer:
- stable environment meeting the needs of the young person
- staff equip to provide the young person with support and coping strategies
- an environment with structure and routine as well as individualized programming
- access to multidisciplinary team
- programming for development of life skills, other needs, and recreational programs
It is important to sustain healthy intact boundaries when in a professional position as a CYC. Boundaries should be closely monitored to ensure personal, professional, and agency boundaries are met, enforced, and respected.
The sub-domain of self-care is essential to CYC's due to the difficult nature of working with high risk children, youth, and their families. To employ effective self-care one must engage in activities to decrease likelihood of burnout.
Reflecting on the occurrences of the demanding practice in the moment, after the moment, and for future events. Looking for ways to update and increase the effectiveness of ones skills.
