Advancements in the 19th Century

Anthropometry:

  • Alphonse Bertillion, Francis Galton, Arthur Thompson, and Jay Seaver started developing the basis of Anthropometry

Forensic Anthropology:

  • Dr. Holmes and Wyman (Anthropologists) reassembled a body to find the approximate age and identity of the victim
  • Thomas Dwight gave a lecture about Anthropolgy legally. He was hailed "Father of Forensic Anthropology"

What Does a Forensic Anthropologist do?

  • Looks at a dead body's skeletal system
  • Can determine if it was a homicide, accidental, or suicide
  • Can find cause of death

Measurements of Anthropomerty

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Waist circumference
  • Hip circumference
  • These allow doctors to spot trends throughout the population

How it is Used

Definitions

Anthropometry: The study of measurements and proportions of the human body.

Forensic Anthropology: The study of skeletal analysis to help solve criminal cases.

Anthropometry: This is how doctors can predict how tall you will be, by figuring out the lengths of different parts of your body than basing them off others who have similar measurements

Forensic anthropology: In a criminal case this would be use to figure out how someone died by viewing there bones

Examples

Anthropometry: Ex. When a doctor tells a kid he/she is in the 80th percentile for height, that means he is as tall, or taller than 80% of the population.

Forensic Anthropology: Ex. Otzi the Iceman, he was found in a glacier, anthropologist could figure out how he died, what he was wearing, what his last meal was and how old he was.
