After lunch, Waverly takes her mom back to her apartment which her and Rich share.
Waverly shows her mom a coat that Rich bought her for Christmas. Lindo points out the coat’s flaws. Waverly is hurt, but at the same time she sees the truths in her mother’s comments
(Flashback to the first time Waverly was seriously hurt by her mother) Waverly was ten years old and determined to quit playing chess to hurt her mom
Her mother soon no longer seems to care (stops polishing her trophies, cutting out her newspaper clips, or hovering over her as she practices)
Waverly loses her next tournament, and eventually stops playing altogether.
We return from the flashback and Waverly is talking to her friend Marlene on the phone.
Waverly says her mother always uses sneak attacks, and is afraid her mother’s criticism will stick and alter all of her perceptions of Rich
Finally she engineers a way for Rich to meet her mother.
Waverly says that this happened with her first husband, Marvin.
Waverly (the first daughter and the youngest child) is named after the address of where they live: Waverly Place
Waverly has flashbacks to when she was a little girl
Waverly and Rich eat dinner at Auntie Suyuan and Uncle Canning’s house and shortly after, a dinner invitation comes from Waverly’s mother.
Waverly thinks the dinner is a disaster

Waverly’s annoyance builds as her mother recommends silly strategies and hovers over her as she practices.
Waverly gets fed up and yells at her mother, alleging that these shopping trips are just to show her off.
Waverly runs away.
"But I found it difficult to concentrate at home. My mother had a habit of standing over me while I plotted out my games. I think she thought of herself as my protective ally. Her lips would be sealed tight, and after each move I made, a soft “Hmmmmph” would escape from her nose." (62)
Waverly goes to Lindo's house, crying, to tell her that Rich and her are getting married but to her surprise Lindo already knew, and told her she did not hate the man like Waverly thought she did. Her and her mother have a heart to heart, and finally, instead of a crabby old woman hell-bent on ruining her daughter’s life, Waverly sees her mother as an old woman who simply cares about her daughter. Waverly, Rich, and Lindo plan to visit China together. It makes everyone happy, and even Rich jokes about how Lindo can translate the menus for them.
The flashback ends, and in present time, Waverly takes her mother out to lunch to try and tell her about her engagement but gives up.
Meets Tim Jong at church and eventually marries him
They have two sons, Winston and then Vincent
When she gives birth to Waverly, she becomes unsatisfied with her own life and wants everything better for Waverly
"It’s a true story, how I kept my promise, how I sacrificed my life. See the gold metal I can now wear. I gave birth to your brothers and then your father gave me these two bracelets. Then I had you. And every few years, when I have a little extra money, I buy another bracelet. I know what I’m worth. They’re always twenty-four carats, all genuine." (39)
Lindo critiques Waverly to try and make her perfect
At the age of twelve- a flood destroys most of her family's property leaving them bankrupt
Lindo Jong is arranged to marry Tyan-Yu at the age of two
Waverly accuses Lindo of only taking her places to show her off
The family moves to Wushi, so Lindo is forced to stay with the Huang household and is treated as a servant
Lindo and Waverly have a heart to heart

A candle is lit with two ends, it is suppose to burn continuously to symbolize the marriage will never be broken

She convinces Huang Taitai that the candle blew out and Tyan-Yu can no longer stay in the marriage or he will die

She makes enough money to move to America and works at a cookie factory folding fortune cookies
