The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) ranks countries’
performance on high-priority environmental issues in
two areas: protection of human health and protection of
ecosystems. Within these two policy objectives the EPI
scores national performance in nine issue areas comprised of
more than 20 indicators (see EPI Framework). EPI indicators
measure country proximity to meeting internationally
established targets or, in the absence of agreed targets, how
nations compare to one another.
1. Increases the number of deaths associated with air pollution and water pollution. 2% of global deaths are attributed to unhealthy water consumption. And 10% of global deaths are associated with poor water quality.
2. Half of the world's population lives in places with poor air quality.
3. The number of people without access to drinking water has decreased from 960 million to 550 million.
4. 34% of fisheries are over exploited or have collapsed.
5. 15.4% of the land surface is protected and 8.4% of the marine area is under some protection figure.
6. In 2014 the world lost a forest area equivalent to twice the territory of Peru.
7. Around the world, 80% of sewage is still discharged to the ecosystems without any treatment.
8. Only 20% of the countries meet the nitrogen-efficient targets in agriculture.
