"'Sam, Eric, Sam, Eric.'

Then he [Piggy] got muddled the twins shook their heads and pointed at each other and the crowd laughed."

"The twins, Sam 'n Eric, were the first to get a likely log but they could do nothing till Ralph, Jack, Simon, Roger, and Maurice found room for a hand-hold."

"Jack rushed towards the twins. [...] The mask compelled them."

  • Identical

Sam and Eric are nearly indistinguishable twins.

  • Happy

Having always been part of a group (themselves) they are always cheery.

  • Persistent

When it comes to work the boys are always willing to do their jobs.

  • Weak

Although well meaning the twins are easily pushed around

  • Followers

The twins aren't the type that will make decisions for themselves.

Sam And Eric

Sam and Eric are always together, and the other boys often treat them as a single person, calling them “SamnEric”.

Chapter 4/ Sam and Eric

"The twins, Samneric, were the first to get a likely log but they could do nothing till Ralph, Jack, Simon, Roger and Maurice found a hand-hold."

Chapter Four

Main Points

  • There is a decline in civility.
  • Jack has most of the biguns, including the twins go hunt with him.
  • A boat passes the island but the signal fire is out and it doesn't stop.
  • Jack kills a pig as he vowed he would.
  • Ralph and Piggy blame Jack for their loss; Jack hits Piggy and breaks one his lens.

"...the mask was a thing of its own behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness"

Jack rushed toward the twins.

'But-'

'-we-'

'Come on! I'll creep up and stab-"

The mask compelled them.

Because Jack had the twins leave the fire went out.

The rythmic chanting shows the slow decline into savagery.

The painted mask on Jack's face was something he hid behind. With it on he didn't have to be himself, he was free to act as he wished.

"The fire was out, smokeless and dead, the watchers were gone.

"Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in."

Instead of helping out the littluns the older boys are attacking them, but civilazation still has a hold in them and they are careful to not hurt them.

"Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he [Roger] dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law."
