Hydraulic Mining

By: Logan and Michael

Types of Minerals Mined

The one major mineral that is mined in hydraulic mining is gold. Other minerals are mined such as silver and copper but gold is the most common kind of resource mined for.

What is Hydraulic Mining?

Hydraulic mining is a form of mining which uses high powered streams of water to break apart rock to be mined.

How it Works?

Hydraulic mining is usually for gold and it works by people spraying cliffs and hills with hoses that have lots of pressure. The hoses will break apart rock and dirt which falls from the hills leaving dirt that can be mined for gold or other minerals.

Where Hydraulic Mining Takes Place

The locations of hydraulic mines are in the states of; California, Oregon, Colorado, Montana, Arizona, Idaho, South Dakota, Alaska, and Georgia

Pros and Cons

Pros

1. No chemicals or harsh pollutants are used during hydraulic mining.

2. Is one of the best ways to mine for gold on hillsides and cliffs.

3. Hydraulic mining has been going on for about 90 years.

Cons

1. Is one of the most devastating types of mining to the surrounding environment

2. Debris that flies after being sprayed usually ends up in rivers making them muddy and bad to drink from.

3. Debris fills in rivers, when it rains a lot rivers will very quickly flood and flood very often.

Environmental Impacts

Hydraulic mining is one of the worst types of mining to its local environment. When people spray water with so much force debris goes flying which causes it to accumulate in rivers making the rivers very muddy. When the rivers become muddy the water flows out of its banks causing some major floods very often

Opinions

Both of us are against hydraulic mining because it destroys the environment and agriculture. It also causes major floods very often.
