"Reading is a tool that no one can take away. A million bad things may happen in life and it'll still be with you, like a flashlight that never needs a battery. Reading can offer a crack of light on the blackest of nights." This means that reading can stay with you like a partner or a flashlight that never needs power.
"When you run or when you are frightened, excited or crying beats faster. Movement of the body, or flow of thoughts and emotions through the mind, can change the rhythem of the heart for a while. Bad thoughts upset the heart." It means to alway be postive to yourself and other people because bad things could happen to other people as well as you.
This famous quote ended up being the main title for the book. This quote kept them alive, and made them never give up, living at the shelter.
