Where you get grades in letters and can get credit from other projects you participate in, in order to pass
each subject is independent.
You get grades depending on your written tests and your participation (and knowledge) while in class.
The German system is in numbers. 1 is the best, 6 is the worst.
All subjects are individual, so if you have a 4 in math, you can not make that any better by being good in sports or taking additional courses in school, to get credit points.

Students in German schools have no lockers for their books and stuff. Every morning you take in your backback the books and notebooks you need for that day with you, carry it around your back and take them home.
Most schools in the US have lockers or cubbies for their books and stuff. Every morning you drop off all of your items, your backback, you need for that day and you can go back whenever to get it. You are not allowed to bring in bags for space and safety issues.
