Sandy Cheeks loves Science! That must mean she's a left side of the brain kind of girl!
I sure am Patrick!
This is the left hemisphere Patrick! It's specialties are:
Logic
Language
Science & Math
Duh!...Barnaclehead.
This is the right hemisphere! It's special traits include:
Intuition
Creativity
Art & Music
Hey Squidward loves music and art! He's a right brain squid then.
Our brain has two hemispheres, or sides. There is the left side and the right sides. Each hemisphere has a dominant trait.
This is the amygdala. Its function is to add emotions to memories.
Yes!
So the hippocampus is what helps me remember my tasks for the day!
Right here is the cerebral cortex. This place is the ultimate control and info processing center
The medulla is inside the brainstem, and controls your reflexes such as sneezing, coughing, and vomiting.
Patrick this is the cerebellum. This controls learned behavors and voluntary movement like posture, balance, coordination and speech.
So my hypothalamus tells me when I'm hungry and thirsty...I understand!
Good job pal!
Here is the hippocampus. This turns all of your short term memories into long term memories.
Along with the parts of the brain, there are certain sections that we call lobes! These lobes control certain abilities.
This is the Hypothalamus. This is right under the thalamus and it controls all of your drives. Hunger, thirst, etc.
So the cerebral cortex is like a boss of the brain?
Yes!
Exactly right!
So it's my thalamus that helps me know that when I see a sign for ice cream for 50c, I have to pay 50c to get my ice cream?
This is the thalamus, Patrick. It's job is to take in messages and send it to a part of the brain to help you understand that message.
Hey Patrick, what's wrong?
Oh hi Spongebob. I'm sad because Squidward told me I have no brains.
So this is what tells the difference between a good memory and a bad one?
Correct!
No you wouldn't Pat!
Wait without the brainstem I wouldn't be able to breathe?
See this Patrick? This is a brain, and we are going to go through all of the parts of it and see how they work.
And then I'll know I have a brain!
This is our frontal lobe. It controls our ability to speak, and understand logic and time!
No brain? Of course you have a brain, you probably just need a little help realizing that. C'mon I'll show you!
Aw really? Thanks buddy!
This here is the brain stem. The brain stem is what regulates your breathing, sleeping, heart rate, and eating.
Right here is the corpus callosum, Patrick. Its job is to allow communication between both hemispheres of the brain. This way messages don't get jumbled up.
Yes Patrick!
So the corpus callosum acts like communicator between both sides of the brain?
Right buddy!
So the reticular formation is what allows us to do more than one thing at a time
Exactly right Pat!
This is the reticular formation. It helps you focus and change your focus.
So my frontal lobe helps me speak and know how to tell the time?
So when I eat food from the Chum Bucket it's my medulla that makes me gag!
Way to go pal!
I get it! My cerebellum is what helps me walk!
Very true Pat!
This is the parietal lobe Patrick. This interprets how we feel. For example, hot, cold, hard, soft, and pain.
So my parietal lobe is what makes me feel pain when I'm stung by a jellyfish?
Unfortunately yes.
The fourth and final lobe is the temporal lobe. This controls what we hear.
This is the occipital lobe. It controls what we see!
No you wouldn't Patrick!
So without my occipital, I wouldn't be able to see?
You're doing great bud!
So my temporal lobe is what helps me hear?
This, Patrick, is the sensory cortex. This receives info from the skin surface and sense organs
The sensory cortex is what tells me where I feel others touch me?
Yes Pat!
Right here, Patrick, is the motor cortex. This controls voluntary movements, and originates muscle memory.
So this is where I control my movements so I can dance!
Correct Patrick!
This is the Brocca's Area, Patrick! This controls our tongue and our airways
Absolutely!
The Brocca's Area is what helps me use my tongue to lick ice cream?
Aw shucks!
I get it! These areas help with things the other parts of the brain don't understand! Spongebob, you're my association area.
Patrick, this is the Wernicke's Area. It allows us to understand what is being said.
So, because of the Wernickes Area, I can undstand everything you're teaching me right now!
Exactly Patrick! You're a natural!
Right here are the association areas Patrick. They are located all over the brain. These are used to help with more complex functions of the brain than the other areas.
Thanks for all the help buddy! Because of you I now know that I do have a brain no matter what Squidward says. You're my best friend!
Anytime pal! You're my best friend too!
