Reapers

-to harvest

-vampire like qualities

-taking too much

-suck the goodness out of something

& only leaving behind the shell

-a machine for cutting standing grain (ie. rice)

-Grim Reaper: the personification of death as a

man or cloaked skeleton holding a scythe; devilish figure

My opinion on this poem is that it talks about the old time and how the women felt about doing the yard work.

Reapers

1. Black reapers with the sounds of steel on stones

2. Are Sharpening scythes. I see them place the hones

3. In their hip-pockets as a thing that's done,

4. And start their silence swinging, one by one.

5. Black horses drive a mower through the weeds,

6. And there, a field rat, startled, squealing bleeds,

7. His belly close to ground. I see the blade,

8. Blood-stained, continue cutting weeds and shade.

- Jean Toomer (1894-1967)

Interpretation

the poem could mean that the author had witnessed a group of people getting ready to do some yard work , however during the process of working a mouse was killed, but the people just kept continuing their work even though the blade was dirty

Imagery

My first interpretation

of the poem was that someone

witnessed a murder and had

terrible remorse from it to the

point where it

affects their everyday life.

when reading the poem we can imagine

seeing a person hiding somewhere in

the bushes watching the people sharpen

their blades getting ready to cut something

and getting to work
