Sick Lady

Why did she do this?

Nursing Career

-She started to starve the babies, to save money and get more money for watching them. For others such as noisy or demanding babies she would use alcohol and even opiates. Many of the children died from Opium. It killed far more infants through starvation than through overdose.

-She thought it was a good punishment. The more the babies cried she would lack on feeding them.

-Mothers were ashamed, they thought it was their fault that their children were dying in this home to lack of breast milk. They didn't blame anyone but themselves because they weren't even suppose to have children in the first place said the police.

-If parents wanted to keep a secret of having birth she would charge them as low as £80. Or she would go sometimes to £50 if the father wanted no involvement.

-Mothers were ashamed, they thought it was their fault that their children were dying in this home to lack of breast milk. They didn't blame anyone but themselves because they weren't even suppose to have children in the first place said the police.

-Unmarried mothers in England struggled to gain an income back then since the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. Which was removing the fathers income for illegal babies for single parents.

-Baby farming started to begin. Baby farming is the housing and caring of the babies. Such as a orphanage.

-Many businesses were set up to take in these young women and care for them until they gave birth.

-The mothers subsequently left their unwanted babies to be looked after as a "nurse children".
