What is Anti-Transcendentalism?

A Counter Rebellion to a Literary Revolution

Transcendentalism

Anti-Transcendentalism was an opposition movement to the Transcendentalist. The Transcendentalist were writers who supported the beauty of Nature, the kindness of Humans and a distrust in government.

Anti-Transcendentalism

In response to the Transcendentalism movement Anti-Transcendentalism was born. Anti-Transcendentalism focused on the Limitations, destructiveness, and how evil humans are by their nature.

Who was the most Famous Author?

Nathaniel Hawthorne

  • Nathaniel Hawthorne was born July 4th, 1804 in Salem Mass.
  • Although he was Unitarian, he held a great deal of guilt because: In his Lineage he had a puritan Grandfather who, as a judge, sentenced many to death in the Salem which Trials.
  • He was friends with the Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, but found their optimist view of the world impossible to accept.

The Writer

& his Style

  • Due to his inability to accept Transcendentalism Hawthorne started to write in a more dark and gloomy writing style.
  • He wrote many allegories, stories with many hidden meaning.
  • He used the voice of an omniscient story teller to offer insight into every situation.
  • He claimed that: the readers imagination could be manipulated through Mood and Images.

A Poem By Nathaniel Hawtorne

Go to the Grave:

Go to the grave where friends are laid,

And learn how quickly mortals fade,

Learn how the fairest flower must droop,

Learn how the strongest form must stoop,

Learn that we are but dust and clay,

The short-liv'd creatures of a day.

Yet do not sigh -- there is a clime,

Where they will dwell through endless time,

Who here on earth their Maker serve,

And never from his precepts swerve.

The grave to them is but a road,

That leads them to that blest abode.

Analysis

Go to the Grave is about how once you die you are nothing. what you do on earth or how amazing you were fades in a heartbeat. the prettiest of flower or richest of man are equals when they are dead. To conclude he is pointing out how pointless these material possesions are in life and how unimportant this life is.

Different Representations of:

Anti-Transcendentalism

Imagery

The Bombing and aftermath of Japan after the United States dropped the Atomic Bomb. the USA dropped the bomb to end the war with Japan but s collateral almost whole cities were wiped out. many were killed or severely injured.

Literature

The Hunger Games is a work of Dystopian literature in which their is a suppressive and destructive government that limits their peoples rights.

"Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch – this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy." (Collins 176)

- Here the main character Katniss shows how the Capitol (gov.) is causing destruction and limiting their people. they are causing children to kill each other for their entertainment and to show their corrupt power.

Representative Song Lyric

The song," Blind Eyes", by Swoope is about how in today society horrible thing happen that people ignore. People preach love but limit themselves when it comes to help. they sit back and watch the destruction. Here he takes the classic biblical tale of the "Good Sumeritan", and puts it in modern day terms.

"Abandoned, laying half dead in the road

And really, I don't know if I'm going to make it

I'm stranded, the masked man took my clothes

And that hatred is what left me naked

I was minding my own,

until the heisters came and swiped what I own

Not right, got left to die on my own

Dark night and the blood I lie in's my own

Bruised ribs and a black eye,

swollen shut, but I still see my life flash by

Geeked, cause I think I seen a priest on the bypass

But he leaped to the other street and passed by."

Movies that show:

Anti- Transcendentalism

Oblivion

The Movie "Oblivion" is set in a dystopian society and is about an engineer who lives on Earth to repair turrets that the government says is necessary to kill an evil race of aliens. however later on in the story we learn that these aliens are actually humans that were suppressed into hiding and that the main characters life has always been a lie. Conflicts arise when the suppression and destruction of this government is questioned.

Anti-Transcendentalism

Anti-Transcendentalism is still a large part of today society as it was when it was first created by Nathaniel Hawthorne And Herman Melville. It has been an important movement throughout history and has been topic of many debates. Anti-Transcendentalism is:

the Past,

the Present,

and the Future.
