Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was elected as Mexico's president in 1833. He didn't like what the Mexican constitution said and declared himself president for life.

People in Mexico wanted to attract settlers to empty spaces of land. The people in Mexico leased huge spaces for settlers.

The Texians arrived in Mexico. Some were running from troubles or seeking a fresh start. They were Americans who ran things according to the Mexican government.

Because of the growing amount of Americans in Texas, the Mexican government got nervous. They passed the Law of April 6, 1830, which banned all American immigration. The law also taxed American goods and banned slaves from being able to go to Texas.

The Texians didn't like the new president. Some said they wanted to become a state while others wanted to be an independent country.

The Alamo was a battle fought over a military fort between Mexico and the US. They declared that no Texian would be left alive. Santa Anna's troops killed every Texian soldier.

Sam Houston was in command of the Texian resistance. His troops were inexperienced and his orders weren't followed.

Stephen Austin was an American businessman who wanted to fix things with Santa Anna. But Santa Anna put Austin in jail and sent an army to Texas.

The Battle of San Jacinto was a battle where Santa Anna's troops were sleeping and got ambushed. The battle was over in minutes.

The Convention of 1836 was a meeting between Texian Leaders. After the Alamo, the leaders declared their independence. It was called the Republic of Texas.

When Santa Anna executed 400 prisoners of war, he piled up the bodies and set them on fire. This was called the Goliad Massacre.

After the battle, the Treaties of Velasco were signed and prisoners from both sides were freed. Texas started to become more like the United States. many Americans moved to Texas while many tejano families moved to Mexico. Sam Houston was its first president.
