Introduction

Art throughout the years has changed and evolved in so many ways, through artists, and discoveries.

The Paris Salon

Salon de Refusés

Throughout this presentation I hope to take you through just a small part of the journey of the modernisation of art.

  • This gallery was set up purely for enterainment and was somewhere the public went to mock and laugh at the artwork of these artists.
  • In the 19th Century in France, Art was very controlled by a French jury of the official Paris Salon. Paintings were conservative and structured, and if any artist tried to submit anything that didn't meet these requirements, they were rejected.

  • Because more and more paintings were being rejected by the Salon, the word of this got around and reached Emporer Napoleon the lll. He arranged to see some of these paintings and made the decision to open the Salon de Refusés, known in English as 'The Gallery for Rejects'.

Art

Artists

Manet was known as the father of the impressionist movement .

The impressionist movement was an attempt to modernize and change the way art and paintings were perceived. There were many of these thoughout history to get art where it is today

  • Some impressionist painters were:

  • Paul Cezanne (1839-1906)
  • Edouard Manet (1832-1883)
  • Gustave Courbet (1819-1877)
  • James Whistler (1834-1903)
  • Camille Pissaro (1830-1903)

Impressionism

Gustave Coubet

Art throughout the years has evolved so much and its hard to believe at the time, the paintings we see today would never have been accepted. Thank you for listening and I hope you have a good day.

Manet always wanted his work to be accepted by the salon but was unsuccessful until the very last painting he painted, A bar at the folies-bergére.

It hung in the salon one year after his death. Although he never got to see it, his work was a foundation of modernisation of the art world.

The women in this painting would not be accepted as one is looking directly at the artist. This is inviting you into the painting, which was never done before.

she was also an average every day woman, which was not something the Paris Salon liked as they did not like the idea of every day people having the privilege of being in paintings that would be hung in such a famous gallery.

it was rejected for a few reasons

  • can you point out the reason the women in this painting would not be acceptable for the Paris Salon?

Here is an example of one of Manets paintings

It was techniques and changes like this that Manet wished would become accepted some day.

List of movements I will be talking about

  • Impressionism
  • Post-impressionism
  • cubism

Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh was a post impressionist painter that left a huge impact on art and its changes. He created over 2200 paintings in his lifetime and his style is very distinctive.

Cubism began to happen in the early 20th century. It is a huge step from impressionism and post impressionism, it included painting through shapes and the use of colours were different also.

post impressionism was a follow on movement from impressionism. It involved more vibrant colours and different brush strokes.

post impressionist artists:

  • Vincent Van Gogh
  • Paul Cezanne
  • Charles Angrand
  • Paul Gauguin
  • Henri-Edmond Cross

Cubism

All of this change resulted in another step of modernising art which was cubism

Le Déjeuner Sur L'herbe

Artists who were involved in the cubism movement:

  • Georges Braque
  • Pablo Picasso
  • Juan Gris
  • Jean Metzinger
  • Fernand Léger

Pablo Picasso

Georges Braque

  • Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculpture, print maker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, and play write.
  • Between the years of 1909 and 1920, Picasso explored the ideas of painting through shapes, and along with other artists this created a movement of Cubism. His style changed to observed items in simple shapes and neutral brownish colours.
  • Between the years of 1915-1917, Picasso explored Crystal Cubism, and painted through diamond shapes.

Examples of Picasso's work

It is important that children have the opportunity to learn about this wonderful cultures and changes that occurred over the years. Videos like the Vincent Van Gogh one will make it easy for them to understand and hopefully enjoyable.

Edouard Manet

Les Desmoiselles D'Avingnon

Edouard Manet was one of the painters who's work went into the Salon de Refusés. To anyone todsay, his paintings look like a normal painting that was painted in the past however, it was Manets paintings that caused the most controversy and here is why
