What does greed have to do with the American Revolution?

The Americans opposed the taxes and acts set by the British under this well known title.

They argued that the Thirteen Colonies were not represented in the British Colonies, and therefore, imposing taxes upon them was unjust.

In actuality, however, the tax on the tea was not strictly enforced at all.

Which led to...

The Brits were not so happy about all that tea being dumped in the harbour, so they punished the Thirteen Colonies by imposing several acts, including:

Does that necessarily mean that happened in the past applies to us today?

Greed

"There is a sufficiency in the world for man's needs, but not for man's greed."

-Mahatma Gandhi

Greed in the Revolution

By: Cheslie and Christina

Some "Intolerable" Acts

The Quebec Act

The Tea Act

An act made by the British Parliament to that put a tax on the tea to accomplish the following:

  • Save the financially troubled East India Company
  • Hinder the tea smuggling business

However, this did not sit well with the thirteen colonies.

Another act imposed by the British Parliament that prevented the colonies from expanding their territory west. And of course, who doesn't want more land? Needless to say, this didn't really improve Britain's relationship with the Thirteen Colonies.

Taxation Without Representation

The Boston Tea Party

One of the most famed events in American History, where, to protest the taxation on tea, a group of patriots stormed the Boston Harbour and dumped three ships' worth of tea into the waters below.

Greed in Present-Day America

Independence

These acts, though, in retrospect, not as heinous as they are famed to be, were deemed 'intolerable' by the Founding Fathers and started the campaign towards independence.

Competition

Since companies compete with each other for prominence in the industry, it results in an influx of modern technology.

Corporate Greed

  • The taxes that were avoided could have paid off the national deficit
  • Businesses are making poor choices and are doing whatever they want just to earn money

The intentions of which a country is built upon affects how the country continues to act in future generations. In the case of the United States of America, the greed that powered the American Revolution continues to affect the country today.

Thesis

If greed drove the revolution, does it

continue to drive the country?

Do We Ever Learn?

Why are we so greedy? Greed has proven its worth as one of the seven deadly sins, so why do we show greed time and time again?

Because it is human nature to do so.

When placed a situation in which you can have more, perhaps endless supplies of an item of favour, it is extremely difficult to say no.

Even fully matured adults find self-control a challenge.
