  • Rome always used slavery which caused people to lose their jobs. The United states abolished slavery.
  • Rome was very chaotic when Emperors were assassinated however, the United States has a long line of people who would take power if the president died.
  • Rome gave exemptions to the draft but America will not exempt you from the draft unless you have a health issue.
  • Rome had many exemptions from the draft which caused their military to become weak. America has a strong military because people want to serve our country.
  • In Rome people lost patriotism and didn't care about what happnd to Rome. Americans are very patriotic.

Conclusion

When comparing this aspect between Rome and the United States I think that these two civilizations are more similar than different. Although Rome and the United States both changed their government to a republic, they both had a different form of a republic.

Conclusion

The United States of America is not on the same path as the Roman Empire. With modern technologies it is easy to govern a large area of land. There is also a better government system in America then in Rome.

Background

  • Rome and America both have a republic as their form of government. However, they are still slightly different.
  • The American form of a republic is called a democracy
  • Rome and America have a similar base to their governments because they have the same three branches which include Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

Slavery was used in both America and in Rome.

Rome

USA

  • Slaves were brought to America from Africa
  • Slaves made up about 1/8 of the population
  • Slavery was abolished
  • Slaves trying to run away would be punished
  • Got slaves fron conquered lands
  • Slaves powered the economy
  • Slave population was 1/3 the total population
  • Slaves that rebeled or ran away would be punished
  • Slavery was always used in Rome
  • Slaves who were strong could be used as a gladiator

  • Both Rome and the United states have a senate
  • The senate advises the main ruler

Differences

  • One main ruler called the president
  • Elected by the people
  • Four year term
  • Chief executive of government and commander of the military.
  • Two rulers called consuls that rule together
  • Elected by the assembly for a one year term
  • Senate of 300 members chosen by aristocracy
  • Rule for life
  • Control foreign and financial policies and advises consuls
  • Rome also had other assemblies that were created to protect the rights of other groups of people like the plebeians and legionnaires.
  • Both include judges
  • Judges oversee civil and criminal court
  • Senate of 100 members
  • Elected by the people
  • Six year term
  • Make laws and advise president on foreign policy

  • House of representatives
  • 435 members
  • Elected by people
  • Two year terms
  • Make laws and revenue bills
  • 9 justices on the Supreme court
  • Chosen by the president
  • Life term
  • Highest court for civil and criminal cases
  • 8 judges
  • Chosen by Centuriate assembly
  • One year term
  • Oversee civil and criminal court

Similarities

  • America got their slaves from by forcing people into slavery. Rome goth their slaves because they conquered lands.
  • In America slaves only made up 1/8 of the population but in Rome they made up 1/3
  • In Rome slavery always existed but in America slavery was abolished
  • Slaves that tried to rebel or run away would be harshly punished
  • In America and in Rome slavery powered the economy

Conclusion

The Roman and American governments are more different. Although they share the same structure the differences outweigh the similarities. The greatest difference between the American democracy and the Roman republic is that in the democracy the citizens must be very involved in their government. This is because they are directly voting for their rulers. On the other hand in a republic all you need to do is vote for a representative and he does everything for you.

Conclusion

Slavery in Rome is more different than slavery in America because slavery in America was abolished.

Background

Commerce is an interchange of goods, especially on a large scale. Rome and America have a large network of commerce. America has commerce everywhere around the world and Rome had trade around the entire Mediterranean.

Rome

USA

  • Center of trade amongst Mediterranean empire
  • Main ports include Putioli and port at city of Portus
  • Massive quantities of goods are shipped and stored in warehouses
  • City of Rome could not survive without food shipped from around Mediterranean.
  • Several main ports
  • US exports more grain than it takes in
  • US imports more consumer goods than it exports

Differences

Similarities

  • Both import more goods than export
  • Rome and America have major ports for shipping
  • Massive quantities of goods are shipped by both Rome and America
  • Large centers of commerce
  • The United States produces its own food and has so much that it also exports food. On the other hand Rome could not survive without imported food.
  • Rome was the biggest place for trade around the Mediterranean. The United States is not the largest but it is still big.

Conclusion

I think that commerce in Rome was more similar to commerce in the United States because the magnitude of things being traded are very similar.
