Latin American History Timeline

1821

Late 1950's

Spain fled from Mexico. Sadly Hidalgo didn't live to see the day. He was tried for treson and was found guilty. He was executed on July 30, 1821.

Fidel Castro defeated the Bastista government. Castro immediately started building a communist government. All farms, factories, businesses, and churchs belong to the goverment.

1789-1793

September 16, 1810

The French Revolution occurred. All blacks and mulattoes were free and the owners were mad. Then in 1791 the French government changed there minds and took back the freedom.1793 The french government got rid of slavery forever. Toussanit L'ouverture led the men to invading British and Spanish troops. Toussanit was left in charge.

Miguel Hidalgo ran to his church and rang the bell. People came to listen to Hidalgo give a speech about Mexico being independent.

The Cuban Missile Crisis almost started a nuclear war. Missiles in Cuba could reach the US. Kennedy agreeed to a deal and had the missisles removed.

The Inca Empire began. Their lands stretched over 2,000 miles. They were the wealthiest of the Native people in the New World.

The Columbian Exchange was created after Christopher Columbus "discovered" the New World. They made the columbain exchange to trade goods. The exchange was a trade system between the old and new worlds. They traded cocoa, corn, potatoes, peppers, tomatos, coffee, peaches, sugar, wheat, pigs, cows, goats, and bees.

Montezuma was the last ruler of the Aztecs. He spread the Aztec over a large part of central and southern Mexico.

Died in 1830 from a disease.(tuberculosis)

The Aztec civilization was conquered by the Spanish. A fight broke out in 1520. Many Aztec buildings, artwork, and Tenochtitlan was destoyed. A conquistador named Hernan Cortes was the one who conquered the Aztecs. He landed with 11 ships, 500 soldiers, and 100 sailors.

Simon Bolivar led troops againest the Spanish in South America. He fought in Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama. In 1824 the Spanish was defeated in South America. Later he became a dictor an tried to create one big country called Gran Colombia.

Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca empire. Pizzaro executed leader Atahualpa (last ruler of Inca) in 1533

Napoleon sent troops to get back control. Toussanit was invited to a meeting, captured, arrsted and sent to franch. He was then imprisoned and died.

January 1, 1994

The NAFTA (north american free trade agreement) scared the Zapatista. They thought that farmers in Mexico couldn't keep up with the prices. They took over many towns in Mexico. Fighting between the Zapatistas and the army lasted for several weeks. The Zapatistas argue the indigenous (native) people need help with health care, housing, education, and jobs.
