The American Common School Period 1840-1880

McGuffey Readers

In 1836 - 120 million copies were sold by the McGuffey Readers.

In 1840-1880 Horace Mann who was the influence in education had huge emphasis on letter sounds.

Kindergarten

The Morrill Act

Est. for less fortunate children. Also with Physical and mental handicapped. Kindergarten did not appeal until 1856 and it was in Wisconsin.

"The Land Grant" of 1862 or the Morrill Act, was a Legeslation enacted by the US Government to assist states in Finacing schools that would specialize in Mechanical & agricultural Arts.

In the beginning of the period most of the teachers taught at home, or in country schoolhouses. salaries were very low, Horace Mann's impact led to better educated teachers and higher salaries, they were made to take a test to prove to they were educated. Higher expectations of teacher knowledge and teaching ability.

School Curriculum

Basic core classes along with Christianity and citizenship. Students learned Greek, Roman, English History, and now American History.
