We have all taken a language
throughout our high school careers and
most of us can agree that it is a difficult
thing to learn. Yes, you may learn a little
here and there, but you will most likely
never be able to speak another language fluently. If we were to make every new
citizen from a different country learn
English in order to live here,
we would be putting way too
much stress on their lives.
People come to our country
knowing that they will be able to live their lives how they want, be able to express themselves and be able to celebrate their own culture. Languages are big parts of cultures and people should be aloud to speak whatever language they want. If we were to speak only one language, we could potentially hurt the many
cultures we see in our
country today.
People of the U.S. tend to believe
that English is our only language,
but it is not. We have people
from all over the world living here, thus making our country multilingual.
We have signs, recordings and even
directions to put things together in
multiple languages and because of
this, we have made it easy for
anyone to do and understand
things.
If we were to follow through
with making English the single, official language of the United States, we would be making a mistake. We would only be thinking about the English speakers of our country and not the non-English speakers. It is rude and
completely selfish.
The United States is a
country full of many great things. We are a very diverse
and multilingual country that
allows people to be who they
are. It has always been this
way and should remain
this way!
This is a common problem
across the world. People will
go to other countries and face the difficulty of having a simple conversation just because the don't know the language spoken there. Places like Italy, France and Germany have made their own official languages and that's good for them. But with this, they have made it difficult for foreigners to live there
unless they know the countries'
spoken languages.
You take a vacation to Italy
and decide to go to a lovely, little cafe for brunch. You want to order some food for yourself, but end up staring blankly at the menu because you can't read what it says. You're now frustrated and mad.
Sucks, right?
We should not
make English the official
language of the United
States. If we were to do so, there would be more negative effects rather than positive
and it would cause too
many problems.
