The California Gold Rush

and the Forty-Niners

What is the California Gold Rush?

Let's answer that first:

The California Gold Rush was discovered by John Sutter and a carpenter named James Marshall. They discovered it because they were building a sawmill in the river and found chunks of gold in it! Word got out, and then came the 4,000 people that sent up near the river. By 1849 80,000 people were there, and they were nicknamed the "Forty-Niners."

What did they come for?

The Forty -Niners came for the gold (obviously) and they left their: Families, homes, and jobs just for gold! Not many people actually got the gold, but they were at risk, People could get sick because they worked in freezing rivers and they went on diets.

Who Were the Chinese Immigrants? And What Happened to the forty-niners?

Let's see:

The Forty-Niners , hired chinese immigrants which did all the hard work. These immigrants were starting to be disliked because they were thought to be stealing jobs. This hard work included going into the mines and getting gold. These immigrants were discriminated by the settlers (because they were immigrants) but they were willing to work for a low pay. These chinese immigrants were a big part in the placing of the railroad tracks. This was dangerous work because it involved TNT (the explosive.)

The Forty-Niners didn't mine a big worth of gold, most of the 250,000+ of them. They came got the gold (even though John Sutter and James Marshall wanted it all for themselves.) The amount of miners that didn't get the fortune worked for companies that brought machines to mine gold.
