Edward Snowden

Former CIA employee exposed a system used by American government (and back by the UK) that collected data (emails and IM plus internet activity) from millions of people every single day.

Ethical example

A self-driving car is going to be involved in an accident. Should it save the occupants of the car, or plow into a group of school children?

Task

Find news articles falling into each category of ethical issue and in a word document, explain the story and any codes of practice/laws that were broken

Whistle blowing

It's not blowing a literal whistle, it's when an employee discloses that some form of serious wrongdoing is taking place.

Whistle blowers are protected by UK law from punishment by their organisation.

Such practices could be, for example:

  • Illegal activity

  • Threats to individuals

  • Damage to property/environment

Disability/gender/sexuality discrimination

The equality act 2010 ensures the equal treatment of all people, regardless of their race, disability, gender or sexual orientation.

Despite this - only 25% of presidents and CEO's in the UK are women....
