Pioneer species are hardy organisms that can live in harsh environments.
Especially in Primary succession, pioneer species need to establish a healthy soil.
Need little water/nutrients
Can travel long distances easily (spores, air travel)
Soil-dwelling microbes
Usually small and photosynthetic
There are 2 Types of Ecological Succession
Ecological Succession
Primary Succession
When once-populated land changes due to a major disturbance
Gradual process by which ecosystems change and develop over time.
When land previously unavailable to organisms becomes available for colonization.
Examples?
After Disturbance:
1. Weathering/ pioneer species develop soil
2. Hardy plants grow and add organic material to the soil
3. Vegetation cover increases as community moves towards "climax"
