Ooho: Edible Water Orbs

By: Johnson Tran

What is Ooho?

EXTRA SLIDE!?!?

Just thank you for viewing this presentation. Have a great time!!!

Pictures:

Ooho are edible water orbs. They are similar to water bottles, but they lack plastic, which can save wasted plastic. On average, Americans alone use up around 50 billion plastic water bottles a year! This spectacular creation by scientists from London is aiming to fix that.

Who made this?

The company who made it is Skipping Rocks Lab in Imperial College London. This is their first product and have started this in 2014. Their mission is to create a safe environment and to lead the producing of seaweed-based packaging.

How does the orb avoid "breaking down"?

Ooho is made by using a 2-step process called spherification. First, they immerse a frozen ball of liquid into a calcium chloride solution to form a layer around the liquid. It then gets soaked in a solution containing brown algae, which makes a second layer. The layers, however, are tasteless, and the inside, obviously, has the flavor.

What are the stats?

  • Each "orb" is only a gulp full, so you would need several of them to quench your thirst.
  • The product is not released yet; there is no price yet.
  • The layers last from 4-6 weeks before degrading.
  • Production is Ooho should be cheaper than plastic water bottles.
