The Odyssey

Book 7

The Palace of Alcinous

When Odysseus enters the Palace of Alcinous, he is taken aback by the beauty of it. Upon entering, he finds that the residents are holding a festival. The Phaeacians are pouring a glass of wine for Hermes, the messenger of the gods.

King Alcinous was so impressed by Odysseus that he offered him his daughters hand in marriage.

Arete ordered her maids to make a bed for Odysseus, and King Alcinous sets his mind at rest by telling him that his ship home would depart when he awakes. They all retire for the night and Odysseus, who is tired after his long and strenuous journey, lays down to sleep.

Odysseus is on his way to the Palace of Alcinous guided by Athena, who is disguised as a young girl. Although the Phaeacians are a kind people, they are not welcoming to strangers, and Athena, who was concerned about Odysseus, shrouds him in a mist to protect him.

After the Phaeacians finish dining, King Alcinous sends them back to their homes. Sitting around the hearth, Odysseus explains his situation to King Alcinous and Queen Arete, and they agree to send him home on one of their ships the next day.

Odysseus still hasn't revealed his identity and Arete becomes suspicious of him when she recognizes that the clothes he is wearing resemble something she had made for her daughter, Nausicaa. Arete asks him where he got them and he explains that Nausicaa gave him the clothes when they met that morning.

A quick recap from Book 6...

Odysseus washed up in the Land of the Phaeacians and walked into the woods where he made a bed of leaves between two olive bushes. When he woke up he found princess Nausicaa playing ball with her maids, he told her about his journey and she gave him directions to the palace and advice on how to approach the king and queen. Athena helped him by making him appear more attractive and Nausicaa began to fall in love with him.
