Chief's wore special hats with feathers on them.

The leader is called a sachem. The sachem was chosen in this way. So if the sachem gets to old, his son will become the next sachem. The sachem's job was to make rules for the tribe and take care of the tribe. Everyone thought the sachem was wise and did the best thing for the tribe. The Algonquin People would present the sachem with gifts.

Shamans/medicine man are responsible for each tribe. The shaman is also responsible for communicating with the spirits. They are also responsible for telling the people what to do when sick.

Algonquin people eat moose, buffalo, caribou, seals, fish ( eg. salmon ), wolf, small mammals, rabbits, deers, salads, berries and wild plants. The Algonquin people used dogs and horses as pack animals. Some things they hunted were: beaver, bear, otter and racoons. The Algonquin people grew corn, beans and squash. The Algonquin people didn't depend on farming for food. The Algonquin people gathered wild plants, berries and rice. They made maple syrup from sap.

That the Algonquin Peoples were famous for the stories they told.

The Algonquin communities are in Quebec. The Algonquin People lived by clean lakes, rivers and waterfalls. The Algonquin is a small tribe that lived in Northern Michigan and Canada. They live in Southern Quebec and Eastern Ontario. The Algonquin people settled along the St. Lawrence river.

The Algonquin artists are known for bead work. The artists also made wampum belts out of white and purple shell beads.

The Algonquin people continue to live on the Ottawa river. Some Algonquin people today still wear moccasins and beaded shirts. But most Algonquin people today wear modern clothes like jeans instead of breech cloths. Now a day, most Algonquin children go to Canadian Schools. The traditional ways of teaching are lost because of the residential schools. Many elders can't speak their own language because of the residential schools. Now Algonquin children are beginning to learn about their culture and language.

The Algonquin people used bow and arrows, spears and knives. For small animals, they made traps. For fishing the Algonquin people would use hooks and nets.

The Algonquin people lived in wigwams. The wigwams were made of birch bark. The men are responsible for building the wigwams. The woman are responsible for the household activities. The Algonquin people lived in wigwams in the summer. In the winter, the Algonquin people live in a longhouse. A longhouse holds about 40 people.

The Algonquin people traveled by using canoes. The canoes were made of wood and bark. They also used snowshoes, dogsleds, toboggans and sleds.

They had a variety of trees. They are maple trees, pine trees, spruce trees and fir trees. The environment had lots of trees, mountains, waterways and flatland for farming. The Algonquin people use rivers and lakes for fishing. The Algonquin people became great paddlers. Some of the crops were corn, bean and squash. Part of the Algonquin land was called the Northern Woods. The Northern Woods is a land of rocks and shallow soil. The land is covered with birch trees and evergreen trees.
