Invitational Speaking

Function of Invitational Speaking

Activity:

In groups of 4-6, generate a list of 3 potential invitational speaking topics and explain why they are invitational

Next, formulate potential MPP's for each of the 3 topics

Present your information as a group before the class

Public Deliberation:

"engaging in a process that involves the careful weighing of information and views" (240)

  • Invitational Speaking:

"type of public speaking in which a speaker enters into a dialogue with an audience to clarify positions, explore issues and ideas, or articulate beliefs and values" (240)

Speech to Explore an Issue:

  • "invitational speech in which the speaker attempts to engage an audience in a discussion about an idea, concern, topic, or plan of action" (243)

The goal is to gain a better perspective

Multiple Perspectives Pattern

(MPP)

Your speech must incorporate multiple perspectives in an "organizational pattern that allows the speaker to address the many sides and positions of an issue before opening up the speech for dialogue with the audience" (249)

Similar to a thesis, if you do not have a MPP, your speech will suffer

Let's look at examples: pg. 249, 244

Tips for Topic Selection

You can expand your informative speech

  • health policies on obesity
  • universal design buildings
  • flat tax system

You introduce and overview an issue then present multiple perspectives on the issue

Pick something you do not have strong beliefs, values, attitudes about

Also, choose something that has clear, research-oriented perspectives
