The film is set in Bradford, where Barnard had already made the much loved film the Arbor. It was shot in and around Odsal and Buttershaw.
Although I don't know the exact budget, it is clear that is very low from the reviews.
The producer for this film was Tracy O'Riordan with executive producers Katherine Butler and Lizzie Franckefilm. It was produced by the companies BFI Film Fund, Film4 and Moonspun Films which are all British Companies, with Film4 being the biggest and most well known. The distributors varied with a multiple amount of companies, each distributing to a different country, Cinéart to the Netherlands and Pyramide Distribution to France for example ( both theatrical). This shows that they wanted the film to be widely distributed and watched.
This film was loosely based on an Oscar Wilde fairytale of the same name. It was directed by Clio Barnard and is about two boys who get after being excluded from school and having their own problems at home. Becoming interested in a scrap man called Kitten and the money that they can make, they start to collect metal for him, which ultimately leads to tragedy when Swifty is killed.
The british Clio Barnard directed and wrote this film. She is becoming an up and coming success, nominated for a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, which is a great honour. Her films have also received 6 wins and7 nominations which shows her as being successful. The Selfish Giant has already received 3 award wins and 4 nominations, which is truly incredible, especially being her second film.
The posters for the film promote how sucessful and well made it is by plastering it in 4 and 5 star ratings. They also focus on the lead character Arbor who is shown centrally on the poster, as well as horses which are shown on the poster and are massively important in the storyline. I have also attached a trailer for the film below, where it is made to look very successful by showing high ratings and extracts from good reviews. The lead character Arbor is again shown to be important as he is frequently in the trailer, as well as the other important characters, mainyl Swifty.
