The North West Rebellion!

19th March 1885

LOUIS RIEL ESTABLISHES PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT

Luis Riel returned to Canada and requested for Gabriel Dumont, he was the leader of the Métis in Saskatchewan. Riel returned to help the Métis to once again fight the Canadian government that was trying to take over the Métis lands. Also in 1879, he set up a provisional government and became the leader of the Métis.

26th March 1885

BATTLE OF DUCK LAKE

Cree and Métis fighters, led by Gabriel Dumont, forced NWMP (North West Mounted Police) to retreat to safety. The fighters from the Cree and Métis ambushed and overpowered the NWMP.

5th April 1885

FROG LAKE MASSACRE

Cree warriors attacked Frog Lake to get an Indian Agent named Thomas Quinn. He refused to be captured, so the Cree warriors shot and killed him and in the process killed 8 others.

1st May 1885

BATTLE OF CUT KNIFE

Chief Fine Day ambushed and surrounded the military at Cut Knife. Chief Poundmaker convinced Fine Day to call off his attack and let the troops go result the few casualties.

9th May 1885 - 12th May 1885

BATTLE OF BATOCHE

Louis Riel asked Gabriel Dumont to stop using guerillas warfare tactics. He felt that Dumont wasn't getting anywhere except for making the Canadian government angry and causing senseless deaths. Riel asked Dumont to gather his forces and defend Batoche from a government invasion. Riel did not know by organizing the forces, Riel gave the NWMP an easy target to attack, 900 government forces surrounded Batoche and 300 Métis, Cree, and Dakota forces defended the fort. After a few days, Riel surrendered the fort while Dumont fled across the country.

3rd July 1885

RIEL ON TRIAL

John A Macdonald charged Luis Riel for treason. The trial took place in Regina, while it was supposed to happen in Winnipeg, but the jury did not care about the Métis cause and Macdonald feared he wouldn't get the answers he wanted. In the end, the jury found Riel guilty of treason. He asked the court for mercy in its sentencing. The judge ignored the plea for mercy and sentenced Riel to death.

EXECUTION OF RIEL

Louis Riel was hung for treason. Many people still believe that the real reason why he was executed was more about revenge for the execution of Thomas Scott during the Red River Rebellion in 1870.
