How the Invention Affected Society

Personal Background

Harvey Hubbell II was born in Connecticut in 1857. He was the son of a clothing manufacturer. He completed his secondary education in schools in Poughkeepsie, NY, and in New York City. He started his career working for a manufacturer of marine engines and printing machinery. He rose to the level of the superintendent of works for the Cranston Press. He was 31 at the time. His greatest interest was finding new ways of utilizing and controlling electricity. -New Haven Enterprise Hall of Fame Website

"In 1888, he resigned from Cranston Press to open his own manufacturing facility. His company started manufacturing consumer products and, by necessity, began inventing manufacturing equipment for his factory. -Wikipedia. However, his most famous invention was the electrical power plug." -Wikipedia. This invention was completed in 1904. It's purpose was to prevent the possibility of mis-wiring and eliminate the need to hard-wire electrical devices to their power source. His life changed as a result of his inventions. He was recognized as an inventor, entrepreneur, and an industrialist.

The "pull socket" has had a tremendous impact on society. It changed life because it provided convenience, safety and control to an electric light. It is still in use today and can be found in most homes. The "pull socket" may be one of the most well known of Hubbell's inventions but it was certainly not his only invention. Over his lifetime he received at least forty-five patents.

Harvey Hubbell's legacy has had a positive effect on society. His inventions created the pathway that has led to many of the quality enhancements for companies such as Andreson, CHANCE, Delmar, Electro Composites, Fargo, PCORE, Hotbox, Polycast, Ohio Brass, Quazite and USCO. One of his inventions the "pull socket " was invented in 1896. It was nickel plated and had a seven inch pull chain. It had a mica interior and insulators. It made a soft click when the chain was pulled. The light bulb screwed into the socket. It was used to create indoor lighting. The design remains essentially the same today as it did back then. One can be found in almost every home today.
