In a 2015 national census, which surveyed 11.2 million Cubans, 1.1 million Cubans described themselves as Black, while 2.8 million considered themselves to be “mulatto” or “mestizo” or “javao” or “moro”. Which basically means mixed.
Many Cubans still locate their origins in specific African ethnic groups or regions, particularly Yoruba, Igbo and Congo, but also Arará, Carabalí, Mandingo, Fula and others.
Countries such as Nigeria, the home of the Yoruba and Igbo cultures, and Equatorial Guinea experienced an influx of ex-slaves from Cuba brought there as indentured servants during the 17th century, and again during the 19th century.
Despite being free to return to Cuba when their tenure was over, they remained in these countries marrying into the local indigenous population.

Trinidad Way of the Cross
A celebration of Cuban traditions takes place in the historic colonial town of Trinidad. The way of the cross procession winds through the cobbled streets, past centuries’ old churches and buildings. The Catholic celebration received new blessing from the Cuban authorities after Pope John Paul II visited Cuba and spoke critically of the U.S. embargo.
Cuba has placed its bets on universal social policies and the central role of the State, to promote and achieve just and equitable human development.
Cuban Holidays
In addition to local Cuban events, there are several Cuban holidays that are celebrated nationally. Many Cuban holidays commemorate events from Cuba’s revolutionary past. The largest of all Cuba holidays is Revolution Day (July 26), which commemorates Fidel Castro’s raid on the Batista dictatorship’s barracks in Santiago in 1953 and the birth of the revolutionary writer Jose Marti in 1853.
