Big Brother is Watching You
*In the novel, war is contant. The main character, Winston Smith, grew up only knowing hunger and political instability. The events in the novel are exaggerated events from Germany and the Soviet Union (Communism and Fascism)
Hunger, shortages and repression actually happened as a result of the extreme governmental policies of these countries during WW II.
*Orwell's speculation of the future is actually how the people were treated under Franco (Spain), Hitler, and Stalin.
*The novel was written in 1984.
There are two main ways a government can take control according to Orwell: censorship and propaganda.
In fact, propaganda plays a huge role in the novel. In the novel, posters are used as examples of propaganda.
Collectivism is any philosophic, political, religious, economic, or social outlook that emphasizes the interdependence of every human being in a society or civilization. It is not connected with any particular political party.
It is generally agreed that Orewell's purpose in writing 1984 was to warn the world about the dangers of totalitarianism. The particular danger in the country of Oceania, the setting for the novel, is that the oppressive government seeks to control not only the actions of its citizens, but their innermost thoughts and feelings as well. Depressingly, the government succeeds.
Totalitarianism is a political system where the government holds total authority over society and seeks to control all aspects of private and public life. People controversially like to label anything the government does (cigarette and sugar tax) as an example of this.
Capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership of capital goods and the means of production, with the creation of goods and services for profit.

In the novel Orwell creates a technologically advanced world in which fear is used as a tool for controlling people who do not conform to what people believe politically.
He creates a dystopia in which life is extremely bad. It's a place where humans have no control over their own lives, where nearly every positive feeling is squelched, and where people live in misery, fear and repression.
