The Sources of Industrial Pollution in the Nile River.

By Domenica and Andrea De Iuliis

The Nile Rivers' History.

Hail to thee, O Nile!

Thou shewest thyself in this land

Coming in peace, giving life...

- Nile, the River, Hymn to the Nile. By the Egyptian of Enna, Translated by F.C.Cook

Source 1:Factories.

There are about 700 facilities manufacturing a variety different products located along the Nile river. Some of these facilities dump chemicals into the Nile, while others' runoff finds its way to the water.

Some of the chemicals that find their way into the river would be phosphors, nitrogen, and pesticide residue. Once dumped, these chemicals can have negative affects on the microorganisms living in the water, by increasing the population of unhealthy bacteria by 50%-180%

Bibliography

The Nile river was a main source of water for many people living throughout North East Africa as early as 3100 BC. The river was very special and important to them. For example, the ancient egyptians could only live within a few kilometers of the river, because the land was so fertile and good for farming, while land further away was dry and infertile. Now, the treatment of the river has been completely different, now becoming one of the most polluted rivers in the world. In this presentation, we will cover the industrial sources of pollution affecting the river.

Conclusion

The Nile is obviously not as clean as it was thousands of years ago, and we believe that the pollution of the Nile river can be largely tied to the rapid industrialization of the country. They have factories, and know how to build things and to create things, but they are unaware of the environmental effects, similarly to North America before the 1970's, when global warming really was a myth to many people. The people living and working along the Nile river need to analyze what has happened to their once treasured and respected river, and the countries, especially Egypt, need to come together and find a solution fast, before their precious resource becomes permanently poisoned.

Trivia Time!

Source 2: Food Industry

1. True or False?

Phosphate is very poisonous.

Studies show that more then 350 different factories discharge their waste in to the Nile. The majority of these factories are involved in the food industry.

2. Name 3 countries that the Nile river flows through.

The Nile is suffering from the amount of agricultural waste that's being dumped into the river. The waste is full of toxic chemicals like detergents, heavy metals, and pesticides. Discharge of oil and grease can come from untreated domestic waste water. Fortunately, those chemicals can be treated and removed from the water, but some like mutagens, and neurotoxins remain unaffected by water treatment.

4. Who is the God pictured in the introduction?

3. Out of the 350 factories that discharge their waste into the Nile, Which industry does it the most:

A: Ra

B: Zeus

C:Sobek

A: The Farming Industry

D:Anubis

B: The Food Industry

C: None of the above, the Nile is perfectly clean

Source 3: Phosphate

On April 22 2015, an Egyptian military owned barge spilled 500 tons of phosphate in to the Nile.

Phosphate is a mineral that comes from rocks when they are eroding. In small amounts, phosphate is good for water bodies. For example, it can help the growth of plankton and aquatic plants.

But in large amounts, like what was dumped into the Nile, it is very harmful. The mineral can cause a nutrient imbalance in the water, which can damage the aquatic plants and kill them, and can also speed up the aging process of the river.

Basic Nile Knowledge

~ The Nile river is the longest river in the world.
