How does his body serve as a catalyst for the Civil Rights movement?

Emmett Till’s mother, Mamie Till, wanted to have an open casket funeral for her son. She wanted everyone to see how racial persecution was getting to be so bad. Thousands of people saw the mutilated body, and it created a spark for the Civil Rights movement.

"I thought about Emmett Till, and I couldn't go back [to the back of the bus]." — Rosa Parks

When and Where did his death take place?

Emmett was killed on August 24, 1955 off the bank of the Tallahatchie River in Money, Mississippi.

THE END

Emmett's Story

Emmett was a 14 year old boy. He was visiting his uncle in Mississippi, where he flirted with a white female clerk of a store. This action ended his life.

Three days later, his mutilated body was found in the muddy Tallahatchie River, weighted down with a cotton gin fan.

How does this topic relate to To Kill a Mockingbird?

Emmett's story relates to To Kill a Mockingbird because of hatred. He was killed because of hatred between white and black people. Many white people in the story think they are better because they are white. Another reason it relates to the book is the unfair treatment. Tom Robinson, a character in the book, is a black man that is accused of raping a white woman. His jury is made of all white males and so was the jury for the murder case of Emmett Till. This shows unjust prejudice towards African American people.

How did he die?

Emmett till was kidnapped by the store clerk's husband and his brother. They beat him, shot him in the head, and gouged his eyeballs out. After he was dead they tied him up to a seventy-five pound cotton gin fan and dropped him to the bottom.
