"To me it was paradise on earth. I have nothing but the fondest memories of growing up in a zoo" (Martel, 15).
Pi much enjoyed growing up beside a zoo. Having the advantage of knowing about various animals will benefit him when he becomes stranded at sea.
"
I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illustrations about freedom plague them both" (Martel, 21).
Overcoming obstacles
“ I had to tame him. It was at that moment that I realized this is a necessity. It was not a question of him or me, but of him and me.We were, literally and figuratively, in the same boat. We would live- or we would die- together. He might be killed in an accident, or he could die shortly of natural causes, but it would be foolish to count on such an eventuality, ( Martel, 181).
In pi's ordinary world people overlook religion and zoos for what the are. Many have very biased opinions about the freedom within both of them.
"I practised religious rituals that I adapted to the circumstances – solitary Masses without priests or consecrated Communion Hosts, darshans without murtis, and pujas with turtle meat for prasad, acts of devotion to Allah not knowing where Mecca was and getting my Arabic wrong. They brought me comfort, that is certain. But it was hard, oh, it was hard. Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love – but sometimes it was so hard to love" (Martel, 231).

Every day Pi is given the opportunity to give in and surrender his life, but he pushes on. On of the tests he comes across is understanding he needs to tame Richard Parker. Living in the conditions they are in, Pi realizes his greatest hope of survival is keeping Richard Parker alive and taming him.
Pi is dedicated to practicing his religious rituals everyday. He believes God will answer his prayers and grant him survival.
"When you've suffered a great deal in life, each attentional pain is both unbearable and trifling. My life is like a memento mori painting from European art; there is always a grinning skull at my side to remind me of the folly of human ambition" ( Martel, 6).
"Richard Parker has stayed with me. I've never forgotten him. Dare I say I miss him? I do. I miss him. I still see him in my dreams. They are nightmares mostly, but nightmares tinged with love. Such is the strangeness of the human heart" ( Martel, 7).
Pi has changed his outlook on Richard Parker. The tiger was key to Pi's survival. Without him Pi would have had no motivation to live.
After being so close to death for such a long time, it began to permanently change Pi's personality, making him susceptible to pain.
