Introduction
For almost six years from 1939 to 1945 Britain fought the toughest war it had ever experienced. Fifty million people lost their lives and hundreds of millions people were injured.

Who Was Involved?
World War 2 was fought between two groups of countries. On one side were the Axis Powers, including Germany, Italy and Japan. On the other side were the Allies. They included Britain, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Soviet Union, China and the United States of America.
Evacuating
The government tried at the start of the war to 'empty the cities' of children and mothers, This was 'evacuation', to protect them from danger. Many London children went to Devon, Cornwall and Wales. Other children moved to villages in the North, East Anglia and Scotland.A smaller number of children (perhaps 10,000) went to other countries such as Canada, Australia and the United States.
