Edwin Prescott

  • Edwin Prescott was born in 1841 and died in 1931
  • His father died when he was 12 years old
  • He could only attend school during the winter, and he became largely self taught in mechanics
  • His most important contribution was the invention and patent of the roller coaster (otherwise known as the centrifugal railway)

The Future

In the future roller coasters will be taller, go faster, and have even more dangers involved in riding them.

They would build them to be similar to the training simulations NASA uses on astronauts

The Roller Coaster

  • The roller coaster is one of the most beloved attractions in amusement parks today
  • He patented the idea in 1898
  • It relied entirely on gravity and centrifugal force to propel the ride forward
  • The first model the "Loop the Loop" (on Coney Island) put too much strain on the rider, so he refined his idea and in 1901 came out his elliptical loop design
